2009-2010 YoungStar Caboolture Shire Herald Arts/ Education winner - Kahlia Ferguson (Lead Singer of Freak Morice)

Queensland band Freak Morice won the grand final of Original Selection at King’s Beach Tavern on Saturday 10 July. With the win they earned the right to support Powderfinger and Jet at Powderfinger’s sold out farewell concert at the Caloundra Music Festival on Friday 8 October, in front of an estimated 8,000 plus crowd.

The award winning band with members all from one family and an average age of just 13 years battled it out with 6 emerging and established adult bands in a night packed full of outstanding local talent. At the end of the night though the industry judges’ decision was unanimous. One judge was overheard saying Freak Morice, ‘ticked all the boxes’, as the band delivered the winning combination of a highly musical and visually engaging performance.

A clearly ecstatic 11 year old Freak Morice keyboards player and backup vocalist Shani Ferguson commented, “I love Powderfinger. I can’t believe we are actually going to support them. The crowd’s going to be huge. It’s so unbelievably cool!”.

Now in their 3rd year together, 2010 is building to be a defining year for Freak Morice. On 28 August they release their debut EP and music video (tickets on sale soon through OzTix), following on from an appearance on Channel Ten’s Toasted TV on July 16, and performances at Creative Generation at the Brisbane Convention Centre on July 16 and 17, the Q Song awards night at the Tivoli Theatre on August 10 and Billy Hydes Ekka Showcase on August 14.

Freak Morice has been nominated in the Group category for 2010-2011 June/ July Bi-monthly award.

Former YoungStar wins on PGA Tour - 23 May 2010

JIMBOOMBA golf prodigy Jason Day has moved a step closer towards fulfilling what many believe is his destiny by posting his maiden US PGA Tour victory. The 22-year-old's two-shot win at the Byron Nelson Championship in Texas on Monday made him Australia's youngest PGA winner and $1.45 million richer.

Day, a former student at the Hills International College, was the reigning Australian and Queensland junior champion in 2005 when he was crowned the Logan West Leader's YoungStar sports category winner.

Hills International Golf Club's PGA professional and golf operations manager James Craperi taught at the school when Day was in his final year. He said many considered the win just another step in his quest to be the world's No.1 golfer. ``For Jason it was only a matter of time before he won a big event,'' Mr Craperi said.

``He was always a great kid, a great talent, a great personality and someone who worked hard. There's no doubt he's going tobe a huge success  it's his destiny.''

But it almost didn't happen for Day. He blew a one-shot lead heading into the final hole when he hit his approach into the water  luckily his closest rival, American Blake Adams, also found water. After his win Day lamented how tough he had made it on himself.

``It was a real, real fight with myself,'' he said. ``I'm just glad I hung in there. I'm so happy that I've finally done it.''

Now that he has broken through for his first PGA win Day says he will be working even harder.

``It's been a hard, tough road for me," he said. ``I was very poor growing up. I want to go ahead and win many more tournaments."

The win jumps Day to 79 on the world rankings, making him Australia's fifth highest ranked player.
